Black History Month, Nelson Mandela and The IslandMarch 31, 2016
Black History Month in New Mexico is an opportunity to highlight African culture from around the world including the diaspora. In a state with a roughly three percent Black population, this time to celebrate Black culture may be even more important than we’d imagine.
This year in Santa Fe, Kamajou Tadfor continued the work of bringing Black culture to New Mexico’s attention by organizing Remembering Mandela 2016, a tribute in music, theater and testimonies featuring a 2-week art exhibit. Kamajou explains his Mandela project like this:
“Black people celebrate our history all year long and throughout our life. Memory is so short, if we don’t focus the attention of the world on what’s important to us, others may be quick to help us forget.”
