This development is the culmination of 12 years of growing and strengthening grassroots organizing and building power for strong families in New Mexico. SFNM started within Forward Together as a year-long pilot project, intentionally building a local network with grassroots organizations and community leaders. The program has succeeded beyond all our hopes and, now, as an independent organization, Strong Families will be able take its statewide work to new heights. The success of SFNM, and the incredible people power and legislative impact that has been nurtured over the past years, is a testament to the power of incubating ideas, and to the experimentation with evolving relationships as we strive to build collective power for our collective liberation.
Now more than ever, in a post-Roe climate, we must organize for and secure protections to comprehensive and inclusive reproductive healthcare, including abortion. Both Strong Families and Forward Together are committed to securing New Mexico as a landscape where it is safe, legal, and affordable to access healthcare for BIPOC women, queer, and trans people. In New Mexico, SFNM has protected reproductive healthcare for people of all gender identities. This has made New Mexico a magnet to providers, individuals, and families having to flee other states with harmful anti-abortion, anti-queer, and anti-trans policies and activities. We need to use all possible strategies to fight for the health of low income, uninsured or underinsured, queer and trans BIPOC communities to have reproductive justice for our communities. SFNM has a 12-year track record of proven impact in communities, securing some of the strongest reproductive health access and most affordable healthcare policies in our country, which was all achieved through building community trust. It’s vital that we pursue all the strategies and interventions that we know can engage hard to reach communities like rural and BIPOC communities.
As Forward Together continues to incubate and support other regional and national ideas, Strong Families and Forward Together will keep building movements toward justice and liberation. Strong Families’ focus now is on building its infrastructure as an independent organization, while continuing the organizing and year-round civic engagement work statewide so that NM families can thrive.
